How father and son are playing a major part in this year’s Ecuador Challenge

As the first volunteers arrived in Miraflores last month to begin work on the Bupa Ecuador Challenge 2009, 2,500 miles away one of the project’s key figures looked on, hopeful that the construction of a new healthcare complex in the village would prove to be the first step to improving the lives of the people in the poverty-stricken community for many years to come.  

Gaston Sandoval Estrella is co-founder and executive director of the Martha Estrella Foundation and is responsible for overseeing much of the project in Miraflores from his home in Austin, Texas, USA. As the point of contact for the foundation, he has been heavily involved in all aspects of the project to date and has seen first-hand how Bupa’s involvement has allowed it to develop into what he believes will become a successful and sustainable model.
